photo 82A0073B_zpsa8744d9c.jpgI’m a runner – with less-than-healthy snacking habits – so I was excited when the folks at Quest Nutrition offered to send over a box of their Quest Protein Chips. Yes, we are all supposed to snack on fruit and veggies when we’re hungry – I KNOW – but every once in a while, you just need something crunchy and salty! These chips fit the bill. One snack-sized bag of Quest Protein Chips has 21 grams of protein in it – compare that to 25 grams for a 4-ounce chicken breast and 31 grams for a 4-ounce steak. Regular chips, meanwhile, have two grams of protein.

Quest sent me a box with three different flavors – Cheddar and Sour Cream, Sea Salt, and BBQ. I tried them each on days that I ran, to see how they’d do as far as restoring some of the energy that I tend to lose after exercising. They are definitely chips in every sense of the word – crunchy, salty and full of flavor. The mouth feel is a little different than a normal potato chip, but I attributed that to the fact that the chips are baked instead of fried, and their lower carb content (5 grams per bag). While I would not recommend these as a meal replacement, they served as a nice accompaniment to my lunch (usually a sandwich on whole-wheat bread along with strawberries or some other fruits). On tough running days, I tend to stay very hungry, even after a meal, and I did notice that these chips tended to help a bit with satiety. Which is good – if I’m not hungry, I’m not looking for junk food in the pantry.

You can find Quest products at several places in DFW, including GNC, Smoothie King, and 24 Hour Fitness. Check the Quest store locator for more info. And now, on to the good stuff! One lucky Fort Worth on the Cheap reader will win a 6-pack of Quest Protein Chips to try at home! You’ll get two of each flavor – Sea Salt, Cheddar and Sour Cream, and BBQ. To enter, fill in the form below. I’ll draw for the winner at random on Monday, Oct. 13 and notify the winner via email shortly thereafter.

Good luck!
