Come out to the town of Westlake this Memorial Day (May 30) for their annual Decoration Day celebration. This free event takes place at IOOF Memorial Cemetery, and it honors men and women who have served in the military. The formal program kicks off at 6 p.m., but you are invited to come earlier to enjoy hot dogs and ice cream. Highlights of the event include a Memorial Day flyover, a bagpipe performance, and a red, white and blue kiddie bicycle parade. (Use this form if you would like to participate in the parade.) Bring your own chairs and blankets to sit on.

Many attendees at the event will be wearing red poppies, a flower that has become an official symbol of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. You can pick these up at several businesses in Westlake; proceeds from the sale of these poppies are used for the welfare of veterans.

The cemetery is at 3101 JT Ottinger Rd., in Westlake.
